Subthalamic nucleus
Also known as the Luy’s body, the subthalamic nuclei are a pair of nuclei part of the basal ganglia located ventrally to the thalamus, dorsally to the substantia nigra, and medially to the internal capsule. In terms of connections, it mainly receives input from the lateral pallidum, cerebral motor cortex (excitatory, glutamatergic), and pars parafascicularis of the central complex. There are also neuromodulatory inputs from the substantia nigra pars compacta. Output neurons are mostly glutamatergic and project to other parts of the basal ganglia. Functionally, it helps modulate motor behavior.
