The cornu ammonis area 3 contains, from superficial to the layers below, the stratum lacunosum-moleculare (terminations of the perforant pathway), stratum radiatum (CA3-CA3 associational connections and CA3-CA1 Schaffer collaterals), stratum lucidum (mossy fiber axons from dentate gyrus), stratum pyramidale, and stratum oriens. It plays a key role in memory, seizures, and neurodegeneration.
