Amygdala (limbic system) (limbic lobe)

The amygdala is a subcortical structure located deep within the brain, in the medial temporal lobe. It is bilateral, resting on the anterior ends of the right and left hippocampi. While frequently associated primarily with fear processing, the amygdala plays a role in emotion processing more generally, serving as a hub for the interaction of cognitive and affective processes. This takes place through learning, attentional, and memory processes.
