The claustrum is a thin, irregular, sheet-like structure located under the inner surface of the neocortex in the insula. Its function is still debated. The claustrum receives most of its input from the cortex and subsequently projects back to almost all regions of the cortex. Thus, it may be important for higher cognitive processing or detecting novel stimuli, directing attention, and setting behavior states.
