Putamen

The putamen is a paired structure that makes up part of the basal ganglia. Together with the caudate nucleus, it makes up the corpus striatum. The putamen is located at the base of the forebrain and is the most laterally located among the nuclei with the globus pallidus located medially and the external capsule laterally. Neurons in this area send projections to the substantia nigra and globus pallidus. Its main function is to regulate movement and learning via dopamine and is thus implicated in Parkinson’s disease.
