The caudate nucleus is a pair of nuclei that make up the corpus striatum together with the globus pallidus and putamen and part of the basal ganglia. The caudate is important for motor and behavioral functions, maintaining body and limb posture, and controlling approach-attachment behaviors. It is located medial to the internal capsule and lateral to the lateral ventricles, frontal horn, and body of the lateral ventricle. The tail of the nucleus terminates above the temporal horn of the ventricle.
