Ventral striatum
The ventral striatum is implicated in many aspects of reward processing. In particular, the ventral striatum is related to predicting the reward value of a stimulus and maintaining that future value in mind to guide behaviors (O’Doherty, 2004). Activity in the ventral striatum is altered based on the immediacy of and preference for the reward (Wittmann, Leland & Paulus, 2007; Hariri et al., 2006). The ventral striatum is also implicated in the modulation of pain (Baliki et al., 2010).
