Nucleus accumbens
Found in the basal forebrain between the caudate and putamen, the nucleus accumbens plays a key role in the reward circuit through dopamine and serotonin. Dopamine promotes desire and serotonin promotes satiety and inhibition. Therefore, drugs increase the production of domain and decrease that of serotonin. This region works closely with the ventral tegmental area and is considered part of the basal ganglia and ventral striatum. It is comprised of two components: shell and core.
