Brodmann areas 17 (V1, primary visual cortex); 18, 19
Brodmann area 17 is known as the primary visual cortex (V1). Through new techniques of cytoarchitecture, it was discovered that Brodmann areas 18 and 19 also played a role in vision. Area 18 is the secondary visual cortex (V2) and Area 19 is the associative visual cortex (V3). Brodmann areas 17, 18 and 19 make up the occipital lobe and are labeled striate, parastriate and peristriate respectively.
