Extrapyramidal system

The extrapyramidal system includes the basal ganglia and other parts of the central nervous system. It is responsible for involuntary motor actions and disorders of the system are associated with impaired motor control such as conditions like dystonia and tremors. The neurons in the extrapyramidal system originate in the cerebral cortex and descend into the brainstem through subcortical nuclei. The neurons also form reciprocal connections to the cerebral cortex.
