The alpha system contains alpha motor neurons, which are lower motor neurons that innervate extrafusal fibers of muscles, allowing muscles to contract. They are the largest neurons in the spinal cord with cells bodies in the anterior horn of the spinal cord and myelinated axons that exit the spinal cord through the ventral roots to reach the peripheral nerves at muscles.
