The cisterna magna is the largest subarachnoid cistern found between the cerebellum and dorsal medulla above the foramen magnum. Cerebrospinal fluid drains into the cisterna magna from the fourth ventricle via the median and lateral ventricles. The cisterna magna contains the vertebral arteries, posterior inferior cerebellar arteries, and cranial nerves IX, X, and XI.
