Rhetorical Questions

Rhetorical questions are very commonly used in both Spoken and Literary Tibetan. They entail the speaker asking a question and immediately replying to it her or himself.

ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན་ “If you ask why” = because

ག་དུས་རེད་ཟེར་ན་ “If you ask when” = when

  • ག་དུས་བཙུགས་པ་རེད་ཟེར་ན་སྡེ་སྲིད་སངས་རྒྱས་རྒྱ་མཚོས་རྩེ་ཕོ་བྲང་སྐྱར་བཞེངས་གནང་གྲུབ་པའི་རྗེས་ལ་བཙུགས་པ་རེད། “When was it instituted? It was after the regent had renovated the Potala palace.” (I.e., it was instituted when the regent had rebuilt the palace.)
  • དེའི་དམིགས་ཡུལ་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན། གོང་ས་ལྔ་པ་ཆེན་པོའི་དགོངས་པ་རྫོགས་ཀྱི་ཆེད་དུ་རེད། “What was its aim? It was to commemorate the death of the Fifth Dalai Lama.” (I.e., its aim was to commemorate the death of the Fifth Dalai Lama.)
