Some Tibetans, particularly among the urban young people, tend to make massive borrowing from the dominant surrounding languages (mainly Chinese or English, depending on where they live). This phenomenon has increased in the past two decades. There is also a tendency to switch from Tibetan to Chinese, back and forth within the same conversation. Both the massive borrowings and code switching are often referred to as ར་མ་ལུག་སྐད་ “half-goat-half-sheep language.”
