The “Self-Corrective” Existential Verbs ཡོད་པ་རེད་, ཡོད་པ་ཡིན་པ་རེད་
These are used instead of the copulas འདུག and ཡོད་རེད་. There is a subtle difference between the two. The verb ཡོད་པ་ཡིན་པ་རེད་ is generally used following a modification or rectification made by the speaker’s interlocutor, whereas ཡོད་པ་རེད་ is used after the speaker has just corrected himself or herself.
- ཁོང་རྒྱ་ནག་ལ་ཡོད་པ་ཡིན་པ་རེད། “Ah, I didn’t know he was in China!”
- སྒྲོལ་དཀར་ལ་སྤུ་གུ་གཉིས་ཡོད་པ་ཡིན་པ་རེད། “So, Drölkar has two children!”
- ཨ་ལའི། ཚེ་རིང་ལ་མོ་ཊ་ཡོད་པ་རེད། “Well well, so Tsering has a car!”
Note that this form should not be confused with its literary homonym, which has the same meaning as ཡོད་རེད་.
