A three-horned yak is an extremely rare variety of yak possessing three horns; these are often released as part of animal liberation rites. Because the appearance of such an animal is so rare, some households will shape the hair atop a normal two-horned yak’s head to resemble a third horn. This is considered a means of bringing good luck and auspiciousness.
