Loom Making

Bhutanese women traditionally used three types of looms for weaving: backstrap loom, treadle loom and card loom. While backstrap was widely used in Bhutan for large garments, treadle loom was introduced to Bhutan in the twentieth century from Tibet. Card loom is used for weaving narrow textiles such as belts and stroe straps. Looms are mostly made from wood and bamboos. People made the looms locally using wood and bamboo from the forests. Specific types of bamboo and wood are chosen for different parts of the loom.
