Astrological Knowledge

The traditional Bhutanese have strong belief in the power of stars, planets and heavenly bodies on the well being and conditions on earth. Thus, Bhutanese follow the lunar calendar and a complex system of astrology and divination, derived from India and China via Tibet, to guide their life. The state sponsors an astrological college in which monks are trianed to be astrologers and diviners, who find jobs as community astrologers across the country. In addition to the established mainstream tradition of astrology, Bhutanese farmers also read stars and planetary positions to tell time and seasons. They also observe important events including agricultural festivals when the heavenly bodies are in an auspicious alignment.
