Travelling

The Bhutanese population in the past generally remained isolated lives. The majority did not travel very far but as part of their transhumance practice went to the neigbouring valleys, particularly from a higher altitude to a lower altitude in the winter. In western parts of the country, the entire family with their animals moved between their seasonal homes. In other parts, people moved with their cattle. Some people travelled for business and religious pursuits to long distances. They would often travel with horses and camp on the roadsides where there is water and firewood. Some carry special travel snacks although main meals are produced during long stops. Bhutanese are avid travellers for pilgrimage.
