Invoking through Pawo and Pamo
Bhutanese have strong belief in the existence of a wide range of non-human deities and spirits in the world. The Bhutanese world view has their habitat teeming with non-human spirits, some of whom grants boons while others causes a lot of harm to the human population in the form of illnesses, accidents and misfortunes. As these spirits have a big role to play in human wellbeing, a harmonious relationship with the non-human denizens of the world is considered very important. There are a wide range of religious rituals and folk supplication and placation rites to venerate or appease the spirits. The rites are often conducted by pawo and pamo shamans who has special power to communicate with the spirits.
