Summer Retreat

The practice of yarney or summer retreat is practised by the monks in the rainy months. It has its origin in India and is traced back to the Buddha's days. In order to avoid harming insects and worms and to also avoid the problems caused by monsoon rain, the monks stayed in a retreat during the summer. This practice was adopted by monks in Tibet and Bhutan but they only spent a month and half in summer retreat. During the retreat, the monks undertake special routine and prayers within the given boundary. Food is provided by lay sponsors.
