Blessed Rain Day

Bhutanese people, particularly in the eastern regions, celebrate the blessed rainy day in the eighth month. It is believed that the star Rishi or Big Dipper, when it is closest to the earth, has the power to endow all the water with healing power. A legend describes how this star shines on a statue of Buddha Vairocana located north of the earth and the light as a result of the auspicious alignment in the 8th month reflects on all waters on earth injecting in them with healing powers. The Himalayan people believe that water on earth becomes powerful during this period and thus take showers and use water as a healing agent. Bhutanese people not only take showers and baths on the day but also celebrate the day with feasts and games.
