Although cards were not known to Bhutan before the 20th century, today, a lot of people play card games of various types. With heavy influence from India, Bhutanese often call the cards by names in Indian languages and play the card games which are popular in India. Both men and women play card games but the housewives of some elites in Thimphu have become notorious for gambling in card games with high stakes.
