The Bhutanese have stories and accounts of mountains often explaining why they have the shape they have. Mountains are often abodes of non-human spirits and the character of the spirit is explained through the shape of the mountain. Some mountains are considered sacred as a representation of a deity and others are believed to have non-human spirits lying underneath or haunting them. There are also accounts of the landscape and shape of the mountain to tell the geomantic significance and also accounts of its flora and fauna. Given Bhutan's mountainous ecology, the spiritual, religious, historical, agricultural and ecological accounts of mountains are numerous.
