Newar Buddhism

While it is commonplace to refer to Buddhism becoming extinct in its homeland of India, in fact it has continued in the north right to the present in modern day Nepal. The Newars, who speak a Tibeto-Burmese language known as Newari, still maintain a vibrant Buddhist culture, though celibate monasticism is largely extinct.
