De-Escalation Practices
De-escalation practices refer to diffusion strategies used by teachers, administrators, and other staff members to respond to student behavior deemed inappropriate for school settings. These practices are particularly popular within trauma-informed teaching models that presume that much of students’ misbehavior is an expression of unresolved trauma that leads to a heightened sense of hypervigilance and an easily triggered fight, flight, or freeze response. In school settings, they might take the form of a “peace corner” or meditation room where students can voluntarily go to calm down if they are feeling strong emotions.
