Dorsal motor nucleus of vagus nerve
Region of medulla is responsible for vagal innervation of various organs within gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Also largest source of parasympathetic preganglionic neurons within lower brainstem. Dorsal motor nucleus of vagus nerve (DMV) located in dorsomedial caudal medulla. Afferent tracts to DMV include insular cortex, central nucleus of amygdala, paraventricular hypothalamic nucleus, lateral hypothalamic area, dorsomedial hypothalamic nucleus, posterior hypothalamus, mesencephalic central grey matter, parabrachial nucleus, A5 catecholamine cell group, NTS, medullary reticular formation, and raphe obscurus nucleus. As for efferent projections, 80% of neurons in DMV give rise to parasympathetic preganglionic fibres that innervate GI organs.
