Solitary nucleus

Cell bodies pair can be divided into 5 subnuclei. Nucleus extends from facial colliculus to decussation of pyramids. Lateral and caudal areas of nucleus receive taste afferents from  vagus nerve. Sensory input from GI system is carried by vagus nerve to caudal part of nucleus. Rostrocaudal part receives visceral innervation from tonsils, tongue, palate, and pharynx via  glossopharyngeal nerve. Solitary tract (vagus, facial, and glossopharyngeal nerves) travels along lateral dorsal nucleus of vagus nerve before terminating at solitary nucleus. Solitary nucleus is involved in sensory autonomic nervous system to control visceral organs. It also receives and responds to stimuli from respiratory, cardiovascular, and gastrointestinal systems.
