This nucleus within the medulla receives information about crude and deep touch, pain, and temperature from the ipsilateral face from cranial nerves V (trigeminal), VII (facial), IX (glossopharyngeal), and X (vagus). There are three subnuclei located within the nucleus: subnucleus oralis (tactile sensation from orofacial region), subnucleus caudalis (nociception and thermal sensation from the head), and subnucleus intepolaris (tactile sensation and dental pain). Through the anterior trigeminothalamic tract, this nucleus projects to the ventral posteriomedial nucleus in the contralateral thalamus.
