Midbrain structure that sends dopaminergic projections to the limbic and cortical areas (i.e. mesolimbic and mesocortical circuits). It is a brain region often studied for its role in drug abuse. Efferent projections mostly go to the nucleus accumbens, thus reinforcing behaviors that are rewarding.
