Red nucleus

Located within the midbrain tegmentum between the cerebral peduncles and quadrigeminal plate, the red nucleus extends to the brainstem nuclei and extrapyramidal system. It consists of a larger neorubrum and smaller paleorubrum. Its function is to receive afferent information from dentate nucleus (dentatorubral tract), superior colliculi (tectorubral tract), inner pallidum (pallidorubral tract), and cerebral cortex (corticorubral tract). It then projects to the olive (rubro-olivary and reticulo-olivary fibers) and the spinal cord (rubrospinal tract). This helps coordinate muscle tone, position, and gait.
