Anteroventral nucleus
The anteroventral nucleus is one of the three subnuclei of the anterior thalamic nuclei. It receives projections from the medial mammillary bodies, caudal dorsal reticular nucleus and laterodorsal tegmental nucleus, subiculum and postsubiculum, anterior cingulate cortex, granular and dysgranular retrosplenial cortex, and secondary motor cortex. It projects to the presubiculum, parasubiculum, and postsubiculum, entorhinal cortex, anterior cingulate, granular and dysgranular retrosplenial cortex, and secondary motor cortex. Functionally, the anteroventral system is a return loop that perpetuates theta activity to the hippocampal formation. It may also contribute to spatial navigation.
