The prefrontal cortex plays a role in emotional response, mood regulation and selective attention. The lateral portion is known to function in behavior planning, the orbitofrontal region plays a role in delayed gratification and the ventromedial part is responsible for emotions.  The left side of the prefrontal cortex is said to be associated with positive feelings while the right is associated with negative feelings. The lateral part is important in the executive function of selecting information from the immense sensory input that the prefrontal cortex receives. The prefrontal cortex has decreased activity in depressed people due to the role in mood regulation.
