Superior temporal gyrus

The superior temporal gyrus is a convolution of the temporal lobe that is responsible for spoken word recognition. The lateral fissure separates the superior temporal gyrus from the frontal lobe. It contains Wernicke’s area and the auditory cortex. Carl Wernicke discovered that a lesion in the superior temporal gyrus led to a loss of the ability to comprehend and speak words.
