Magnet School

Magnet schools are an educational model in which public schools prioritize a particular subject matter, such as math and science or the performing arts. Magnet schools operate outside of zoned school boundaries; as a result, they are open to students across school districts and thus operate as a “magnet,” attracting students from a variety of locales. Magnet schools receive government funding and do not charge tuition; however, many use selective admission criteria and conduct formal admissions processes to determine who may attend the school. Unlike charter schools, magnet schools must be run as non-profit institutions and meet statewide education standards, otherwise the school’s funding could be reduced or cut altogether.
