Intralaminar nuclear group

Thalamus cells include a rostral division containing the paracentral, central lateral, central dorsal, central medial nuclei, and a caudal division composed of the centromedian and parafascicular nuclei. Intralaminar groups can be divided into anterior and posterior groups. The anterior comprises the central medial, paracentral and central lateral nuclei; and receives input from the cerebellum, and spinal cord. The posterior comprises the centromedian and parafascicular nuclei; and receives input from the internal globus pallidus and projects to the striatum, motor cortex, rhinal sulcus and cingulate gyrus. Both groups project to the cortex. Anterior intralaminar neurons affect spontaneous eye movement, arousal, and cortical processing.
